場所・自然

焼尻の自然林は北海道西部の日本海側に浮かぶ島で、武蔵水道を隔てて西方にある天売島とともに羽幌町に属します。面積は約5.21k㎡あり、一市五町にまたがる広大な暑寒別天売焼尻国定公園の中にあります。
焼尻島には島の面積の3割ほどが国の天然記念物になっている自然林があります。かつてはニシン漁で栄えた漁業や生活を支える燃料として伐採され、強い海風にもさらされて巨木は少ないですが、身を寄せ合い複雑な生態系を作っています。
ミズナラ・イタヤカエデ・ナナカマドなど約50種類もの深い森に覆われていて、中央部の東側には落葉広葉樹が、谷筋には針葉樹が発達しています。
なんとも特徴的なのがこれらの上層林の下に高密度に生息している“イチイ（オンコ）”が随所にあることです。淡い色合いの亜紀の森に、緑濃いイチイは強いアクセントになりオンコ荘と呼ばれる珍しい地帯もあるほどです。

対馬海流に洗われているため、道北にしては温暖があります。海水浴場やキャンプ場を有していて、主たる産業は漁業と、ほかにも観光と畜産があります。畜産は食用羊のサフォーク種の国内有数の産地としても有名で道路から放牧風景も見られます。

しかしここは日本の北の外れ。。。冬の間は北西の季節風が吹きつけ、島は雪に覆われ厳しさを増します。焼尻島の観光シーズンは5月から9月。遠くに利尻、近くに天売。夏の間はたくさんの観光客が海上に浮かぶ草原を求めて訪れます。

アイヌ語「ヤング・シリ」（近い方の島）を語源とし、羽幌港からフェリーで約55分、高速船で約33分の船旅で着く周囲12キロメートルの小さな島です。多種多様の植物が繁る自然林や、数多くの小鳥達の水飲み場みなっている池や渓谷があります。
またはるにはカタクリやエゾエンゴサク、夏にはエゾカンゾウ、エゾスカシユリなど花の島とも呼ばれているほど数多くの花々が咲き、豊かな自然が魅力的な離島です。

島の中央部から東部に広がる原生林は、海から吹き上げる強風と降り積もる雪の重さのために高さを抑えられた特異な植生を示しており「焼尻の自然林」として学術的に貴重で、1983年には天然記念物に指定されました。
この国定公園には天売島の海鳥繁殖地ということもあり、こちらも天然記念物となっています。
2009年には『おんこ（イチイ）原生林と羊とアザラシ』で“島の宝100景”に選ばれています。
