　北海道足寄郡足寄町東部にある阿寒国立公園に、湖「オンネトー」があります。オンネトーとはアイヌ語で「年老いた沼」または「大きな沼」を意味します。さらに活火山である雌阿寒岳と阿寒富士の西麓に拡がる原生林内に位置する『オンネトー湯の滝』は神秘の湖と呼ばれた北海道三大秘湖の一つとなっていて、エメラルドグリーンの輝きがほんとに神秘的です。

　この湖は火山噴火の溶岩流によってできた周囲約4キロメートルの堰き止め湖です。 オンネトーの湯の滝は、オンネトーの南南東方向に約2.0キロメートルほど離れたところに位置し、温泉水が滝になって流下していることから名付けられたようです。高さ20数メートルの2条の滝からなり、滝上流の泉源では温度が40℃ほどの温泉が湧き出し、原生林内の秘湯として利用されてきました。この滝は、温泉水から藻類とそれに共生する細菌によってマンガン鉱物を生成する場所として知られていて、陸上においては世界でも唯一であるということから、2000年に「オンネトー湯の滝マンガン酸化物生成地」として国から天然記念物の指定を受けました。

　この温泉水が流れ込む池に、何者かが持ち込んだとされる熱帯魚のグッピーやナイルティラピアが繁殖し、生成に欠かせない藻類が食害を受け問題になりました。かつてはこの滝つぼで入浴ができ、微生物がマンガン酸化物を生成する現象から保護のために入浴禁止になり別の場所に湯船を作りました。
　しかしこの湯船に湯を引湯することが原因で、それより下流でのマンガン酸化物を生成する現象に影響があることが判明したため、2005年にこれも廃止されました。その為、現在では完全にこの滝での入浴が不可能となりましたが、この生成過程が地表で見られるということは大変珍しいものだそうです。このような無料の温泉施設に入ることを夢見ていたのに、今は浴槽のみが残っている状態・・・。非常に残念な気持ちになりますが、このような貴重な施設をいつまでも大切に残しておきたいものです。天然記念物の浴槽のみでも見てみたい方はぜひともチャレンジして、温泉は近くの温泉地で温まりましょう！
