場所・自然

根室半島南側、陸からの距離は一番近い場所で約２．６kmの場所にふたつの小さな島が浮かんでいます。

正直、このふたつの島を紹介するかどうか少し考えてしまいました。
それは、どちらの島も特別な許可がない限り、上陸が許されていないのです。

撮影者の岡田敦氏は、“写真の芥川賞”とも言われる、木村伊兵衛写真賞を受賞した、世界でも注目される北海道稚内出身の写真家。

この映像は、島の環境及び動植物の調査・研究のための許可のもと、上陸して記録されたものなのですが、それを遥かに越えた物語の様なものを感じます。

“ユルリ”というのは、アイヌ語で「鵜のいる島」という意味である“ウリリ”が語源で、“モユルリ”は、「小さなユルリ」という意味だそうです。
どちらの島も、断崖４０m程の高さがあり、無人島であることもあいまって、アイヌ語の語源通り、海鳥（北方系）の営巣地になっています。

どんな、海鳥がいるのかと言うと、エトピリカ・チシマガラスなどの絶滅危惧種であり稀少鳥類に指定されているもの。
エトピリカは、ハトよりも少し大きめで、黒いからだに、白い顔、その先のくちばしはオレンジ色、目の上の部分から眉毛のように白く長い羽があり、一目見ると忘れられないインパクトが特徴です。
また、チシマガラスの方は、シルエットは正に鵜！
艶のある黒い身体で、夏は目の辺りが赤っぽくなるため、英名では“red faced”と言われるそうです。
また、頭の前方と後方の二カ所が、とさかの様に伸びるところも特徴で、サザエさんヘアーを連想させます。

そして、映像にも映っていますが、一番気になるのは、ユルリ島にいる馬。
そもそも、戦後、稚内は昆布漁で大いに賑わい、ユルリ島は、昆布の干場として活用され始め、馬はその際の運搬用に持ち込まれたのです。
しかし、段々と島での馬の役割は薄らいでゆき、馬を連れ帰ったところで、漁師達は放牧する場所を持っておらず、島にはエサとなる草も豊富に茂っていた事から、馬を残して島を去ることになりました。

やがて、馬は野生化し、世代を重ね、多い時で３０頭程の馬が生息していたそうです。

しかしながら、２０１４年２月の記録で確認された馬は６頭、すべてが雌馬。
そう遠くないうちに、ユルリ島から馬はいなくなります。

人の足跡を感じさせる馬の存在は、単なる無人島にはない“何か”を物語っている様な気がします。

気象条件がよければ、根室市昆布盛の高台から、ユルリ島の灯台に付近にいる馬を見る事が出来るそうです。
また、岡田敦氏による映像も定期的にYouTubeにアップされます。
物語の終わりを、温かく見守りたいですね。
