現在の北海道の形の基本は、中生代白亜紀から新生代第三紀（約一億年前から約一千万年前）にかけてプレートの沈み込みにより東西北海道が接近し、ついには衝突することにより形成されたものです。

夕張岳は、この衝突により生じた北海道中央部を南北に走る脊梁山脈のうち夕張山系の南端近くに位置します。標高は1,668メートルの山で、夕張市と空知郡南富良野町にまたがり山域は北側の芦別岳と共に「富良野芦別道立自然公園」に指定されています。また、「花の名山」として知られ初夏から夏にかけての花のシーズンには全国から約4,000人もの登山者が訪れます。 蛇紋岩の土壌に適応し美しい花を咲かせる希少な高山植物が200種余り生育しています。これらの高山植物の群落は、「蛇紋岩メランジュ帯」と呼ばれる珍しい地形と共に、1996年には国の天然記念物に指定されています。

夕張山地の南端近くに位置し、主峰の座は芦別岳（標高1726.5メートル）に譲るものの、訪れる登山者は圧倒的に多いです。芦別岳は上部に蛇紋岩の露出地があり、複雑な地形と合わせて多種類の高山植物を見られるものと思います。夕張岳の高山植物群は、蛇紋岩の成分である超塩基性の成分と結びついたきわめて希少な蛇紋岩変形植物、氷河期の遺存種など夕張固有あるいは特異的な分布を示す高山植物で特徴づけられます。

夕張岳固有種としては、ユウバリコザクラ、エゾノクモマグサ、シソバキスミレなど、また特異な分布を示す植物としては、カトウハコベ、ナンブイヌナズナ、ミヤマハンモドキ、シロウマチドリ等があげられます。夕張岳の高山植物の組成はわずかな距離で変化し、北海道の山岳でみられる高山植物のほぼ全てが見られ、さらに夕張岳固有の植物が加わることで他では見られないほどの豊富で多様な様相を呈しています。
登山路は東西に各1コースありますが、札幌に近い西側の「大夕張コース」がかなり賑わっています。

【大夕張コース】
国道から登山口までの林道は約14キロメートルあります。「白銀橋」を渡って約5キロメートル地点にゲートがあり、“ヒュッテまで約9キロメートル”の案内板があります。ゲートの開放は6月～9月末までを予定され登山口には20台ほどの駐車スペースがあります。国道から登山口までは来るまで約30～40分ほどかかるでしょう。
登山ルートは「冷水コース」と「馬の背コース」の2ルートあります。

・冷水コース　標高差　1168メートル　登り4時間10分　下り2時間50分

駐車場ゲートから林道を10分程登ると右手に「冷水コース」があります。しばらく傾斜の緩やかな造材道が続き、傾斜がきつくなるとコース上はアマエゾマツの植林地を抜け樹林の斜面へと登っていきます。30分ほど登るとつづら折りの途中で数人なら十分に休憩できる場所があります。皿に0分ほど登ると第一の水場となる「冷水ノ沢」が。もう少し進むと「前岳ノ沢」もありますが水分量が少ないので、「冷水ノ沢」で補給するほうがよいでしょう。ここから北側に登り“馬の背コース”と合流する前岳の西尾根に出ます。尾根上はこれまでとは違い、北側には岩壁をまとった滝ノ沢岳（通称：姫岳）と東側には前岳を見上げられ展望がかなりよくなります。山開きの6月下旬頃から7月上旬には満開のシラネアオイ群落はまさに圧巻！この他、頂上までにたくさんの高山植物を見ることができます。花はもちろん、頂上から見る360度の大展望は今まで登ってきた疲れも吹っ飛ぶほどです。

・馬の背コース　登り4時間20分　下り3時間

先ほどの冷水コース登山口から分かれ、夕張岳ヒュッテ前にこのコースの登山口があります。登り一辺倒の辛さはありますが尾根の上に出ると所々で展望が利いて滝ノ沢岳が望まれてきます。この尾根には見ごたえのある冷温帯針広混交林が残っています。コース上には二つの顕著なコブがあり、道路脇の笹を摑まえながら登るほど急な「一ノ越」と、「二ノ越」は小さくすぐ先に冷水コースとの合流点となる登りがあります。どちらのコースもコースタイムに大きな違いはありませんが、通常オススメするのは登りが冷水コース・下りは馬の背コースとなります。（急な下りはちょっと怖い・・・という方はどちらも冷水コースで往復するほうがいいでしょう。）

夕張岳の上部には蛇紋岩という、普通の植物達の生育には都合の悪い地質が広がっています。そのためそれに耐えうる特殊な植物たちが分布しています。夕張岳の固有植物は、亜種・変種・品種（種のランク下の分類単位）を含み10以上数えることができます。また、湿原や岩場など多様な環境が揃っている為、シダ植物を含めると600種以上の植物が知られていてまさに“植物の宝庫”ともいえる山です。もちろん高山植物を持ち帰ることは犯罪になりますので、自分の足で山を登り、壮大な景色と一緒に高山植物たちを見て感動を味わってくださいね。
